Living Building Challenge Petals

Living Building Challenge Summary

The above scheme shows the different areas that the Living Building Challenge tackles. They are divided into seven “Petals”:

  1. Site
  2. Water
  3. Energy
  4. Health
  5. Materials
  6. Equity
  7. Beauty

Each petal is subdivided into different categories or “Imperatives”. In total there are 20 imperatives that cover different fields within each Petal. The different imperatives can be applied to different typologies of built-up environments such as Buildings, Infrastructure, Landscape or Community Development. Those typologies will normally vary by the number of occupants, use, construction type, and location; however the fundamental characteristics will remain the same.
